Last week I had to present a short talk about determination in one of the Toastmasters sessions I attend; my topic of course was about determination <not sure why but these days I’m very engaged with this word> but anyway, out of that short talk, I’d like to share with you three main ideas I consider very important to impulse our determination.
Idea #1: Goals are nothing but dreams: so in order to transform those dreams into a real goal and achieve them, you must start doing something about it. You need to take action and work to achieve them; otherwise you’ll continue dreaming but hardly reaching your goals. Action is a key component of Determination!
Idea #2: You are the owner of your goals: under this premise…it is then up to you to build them and get them. Your dreams and therefore your goals are there just waiting for you to achieve them but they will not come to you, you need to get them, you need to take them. There are no limits but the ones you have on your own mind and you are the only one who can make something about it. See for example Félix Baumgartner; this 43 years old Australian determined person who broke three world records and made the fastest jump in the planet from the highest place ever done. It took 5 years of preparation, 6 minutes of free fall and tons of Determination to achive it. It was his dream, it became his goal and it is now his most important achievement so far.
Idea #3: The time to start is now: life is too short to keep waiting for events that could never happen. Many people say things like: “I’ll probably pursue my dream of traveling the world until I graduate from college” or “I just don’t have time to workout but I’ll do it once I get my shift adjusted”. You must take the decision and start right away, no one and nothing can stop you if you are determined to achieve your goals but you need to start right now because no one can assure you there’s going to be a tomorrow.
Determination implies that you need to start today to achieve your goals and transform them from dreams to achievements. The decision is yours because you are the owner of your dreams and your goals but you need to forget about those mind games and excuses that we create to stop us from moving and taking some risks; you need to truly believe that nothing will stop you if you have Determination and you believe in yourself.
Are you willing to do what it takes to transform your dreams into goals and your goals into achievements?
